UPDATE: 517 drunk drivers arrested
Police arrested 517 drivers behind the wheel and motor cyclists under the influence of liquor during the last 48 hours.

Under the special police operation came to effect from Tuesday, a highest number of arrests was reported from Colombo District and it was 149.
Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana told our news team that this special operation will continue until the 5th of January.
He also said that among the arrested, 284 were motor cyclists.
SSP Ajith Rohana said that many drivers and motor cyclists tend to drink and drive, therefore this special operation was launched to safeguard them.
Meanwhile 546 persons who met with various accidents were admitted to Colombo National Hospital during the last few days and 201 out of them are still receiving treatment.
Hospital sources stated that 114 were admitted due to road accident while 2 children were admitted due to accidents of fire crackers.

220 drunk drivers arrested within 24 hours
Police arrested 220 drivers behind the wheel under the influence of liquor during the last 24 hours.
Under the special police operation came to effect since yesterday, a highest number of arrests was reported from Colombo District and it was 85.
Meanwhile 367 persons who met with various accidents were admitted to Colombo National Hospital yesterday and today.
30 out of them were admitted due to road accidents.
At the same time, Colombo National Hospital Director Dr. Anil Jasinghe urged the drivers to abstain from driving after alcohol especially in the night.
He said majority motor accidents during the festivals have been reported after drunk driving in the night.
