Indian PM Manmohan Singh to retire after elections

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has announced that he will not stay in the post if his party wins the next election, due in the summer.

He said he would "hand over the baton to a new Prime Minister".

Singh has been India's Premier for the past decade, heading a coalition government led by the Congress party.

Singh was addressing a rare press conference - only the third such briefing during his whole term of office.
