Special operation to apprehend corrupt police officers launched

The Officer in Charge of the Payagala Traffic Police was arrested today by officers of the Bribery or Corruption Commission.

The officer in question was arrested after he attempted to obtain a 10 thousand rupee bribe to release a tri shaw that was evidence in a court case.

The officer who was arrested is a sub inspector named Weeratunga Gallage and he had attempted to obtain the bribe from an individual who was hailing from the Payagala region.

7765 complaints have been received by the Human Rights Commission during the past year and a majority of them were lodged against the police.

However, Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana stated that a special operation has been launched to apprehend corrupt police officers.
