34 workers stage a roof-top hunger strike at Pelwatta Sugar factory
34 temporary drivers of the Pelawatta Sugar Factory have begun a hunger strike unto death atop the roof of a building in the factory at approximately 6am today demanding that they be given permanent appointments.
A ceremony for promoting several employees was also organized today at the factory and the chief guest for the ceremony was Minister of Sugar Industries Lakshman Senevirathne.
However, speaking to our news team the employees engaging in the hunger strike alleged that the minister did not pay attention to their plight.
Although our news team attempted to contact the minister to inquire regarding this incident it was to no avail as he was taking part in the ceremony organized at the Pelawatta Sugar Factory.
Upon inquiry, the administrators of the factory stated that a program has already been initiated to give permanent appointments to temporary employees in batches.
