Jayalalitha exploiting Indo - SL fishermen issue for political gains - Indian Media charges
An Indian leading newspaper, India Today charges that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha Jeyaram has been abusing the issue of the arrest of Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan authorities for petty political gains.
India Today questioned whether Jayalalitha expects to bring the fishermen issue to her political platform intending to win the forthcoming general elections.
The newspaper also accused the Chief Minister for blocking all means to solve the fishermen’s problem.
Starting from the 16th of March last year, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has replied to 11 letters addressed to him by Jayalalitha.
In all his letters, the Premier has reiterated to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister the need of early discussions between India and Sri Lanka to solve the fishermen problem.
Later Jayalalitha agreed to provide assistance to hold the discussions but it has not realized as yet, and holding of any future discussion is also uncertain.
India Today stated that it is suspicious whether Jayalalitha is dragging the issue and delaying it in order to oil her political propaganda machine with the fishermen issue in the forthcoming general election.
