Signs of John Amaratunga reaching seat to chair parliament.
UNP sources say that it is possible that parliament’s chief opposition whip MP John Amaratunga becomes the Speaker in the near future.
The same sources say that if that happens, it is likely that the mantle of Prime Minister falls on Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa.
Currently MP John Amaratunga is engaged in a Middle East tour with the President.
A controversial situation has also cropped up in political platforms with with regard MP John Amaratunga’s tour.
At the media briefing the UNP convened in Colombo yesterday UNP media spokesman MP Gayantha Karunaatilleke stated that MP John Amarathunga engaged in the tour with the conset of the party.
Earlier too there was a rumour about MP John Amaratunga joining the Government.
We inquired regarding these reports from Member of the UNP Leadership Board MP Lakshman Kiriella.
He stated that at a time a provincial council election has been announced, John Amarathunga joining the President on a foreign tour discourages the party supporters.
Although we tried to obtain views from few government Ministers on this regard our attempts were futile.
