A powwow was held between Northern Province Chief Minister C. V. Vigneshwaran and visiting US war crimes envoy Steven J. Raph in Jaffna yesterday.

In addition discussion was also held with Jaffna Bishop, His Lordship Thomas Saundranaayagam and Mannar Bishop, His Lordship Raayappu Joseph.

Subsequently the US special envoy also met the Northern Province Governor G. A. Chandrasiri.

Similarly Steven J. Raph also met and held talks with civil organisation activists in Jaffna yesterday.

US to submit a resolution demanding international inquiry on Sri lanka.

US Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues in the office of Global Criminal Justice, Stephen J. Rapp says the US would submit a resolution to the rights sessions in Geneva next March thereby bringing an impact on the Sri Lankan government.

Visiting US Ambassador-at-Large Rapp announced his plans during a meeting with civil organization activists in Jaffna today.

In response to Ambassador Rapp’s cause of action, Jaffna civil organisation activists have asked Rapp to refrain from bringing a resolution against Sri Lanka.

The activists have asked Ambassador Rapp to submit an alternative proposal to Geneva sessions instead which would be strong enough to solve the national crisis in the country.

Meanwhile Ambassador Rapp also held discussions with Tamil National Alliance parliamentarians M. A. Sumandiran and Mawei Senadhirajah in Colombo today during which he said USA has decided to present a proposal to request for an independent international inquiry into alleged war crimes that took place in Sri Lanka.

Speaking to the Sinhala news service of the BBC, TNA MP M.A. Sumandiran had stated that the United States Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues Stephen J. Rapp had stated that the US will engage in discussions with 47 other countries regarding this.

The US Ambassador—at—Large at the Office of Global Criminal Justice, Stephen J Rapp will visit the north today to hold talks with local officials.

Rapp, who arrived on Monday on a week — long visit, will spend two days in the north holding talks with officials and leaders.

US officials said Rapp aims to meet government officials, political and civil society leaders to discuss issues focusing on Sri Lanka’s justice, accountability and reconciliation issues.
