A Prime Minister’s coordinating Secretary informed today that the Premier has apologized to the bhikkus for calling some of them ‘persons in yellow robes’.

The particular apology in writing was handed over to the Sihala Ravaya by the Premier’s Coordinating Secretary Amila Piyasinghe this afternoon.

Addressing a gathering in Gampola recently, the Premier called certain monks persons in yellow robes.

Protests were held against the Prime Minister’s remarks in several areas last week.

The Sihala Ravaya Organization also staged a protest this morning opposite the Prime Minister’s Office demanding the Premier to apologize to the Maha Sangha for his insulting remarks.

In addition, Sihala Ravaya members demanded that the Prime Minister should make a statement agreeing to resign from the Buddha Sasana Ministry portfolio.

Vehicular traffic was blocked from time to time on Flower Road where the Premier’s Office is located due to the protest this morning.

Later Sihala Ravaya monks attempted to enter the Premier’s Office but was obstructed by police.

Reacting to the police obstructions, the monks cleared the security barricades and attempted a forced-entry to the premises.

Later a coordinating secretary of the prime minister’s office handed over a letter to the protestors.

However the protestors raised objections against the content of the letter.

After Sihala Ravaya President and former MP Akmeemana Dayarathana Thera explained the protestors of the content of the letter, the protestors dispersed.
