Chief opposition Whip MP John Amaratunga denies reports that he is preparing to join the government and obtain the position of speaker.
He made this statement upon inquiry by our news team after he returned today from a tour of the Middle East, where he accompanied President Mahinda Rajapakse.
MP Amaratunga also denied reports that he will be giving a secret report to the opposition leader after his tour of the Middle East.
Elaborating further MP Amaratunga stated that publication of reports regarding the position of speaker when there is no vacancy for the position is amusing.
MP Amaratunga further stated that he joined the President in his tour of the Middle East based on an invitation he had received from Palestine and that he had informed the party regarding this.
However, reports state that the UNP is preparing to respond in case there happens to be a vacancy in the position of speaker and if John Amaratunga is presented as the government candidate for the position.
A senior member of the UNP stated that the opposition will field a separate candidate for the position.
Elaborating further he stated that there will be a secret vote in this regard and that the government will also support that.

UNP MP John Amarathunga refutes media reports claiming that he was planning to join the government and said he never sought the post of Speaker either.
