Sri Lanka conveys official protest to Rapp's actions

The Sri Lankan government lodged an official protest at the allegations made by the US stating that hundreds of civilians were killed by the Army during the final stages of the war.

Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs Karunathilaka Amunugama stated that Minister Prof G L Peiris had conveyed Sri Lanka’s dissatisfaction when he met with visiting US Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues Stephen J. Rapp yesterday.

The US Embassy in Colombo had uploaded 3 photographs of Rapp’s tour in Pudumathalan on its Twitter page.

One of them titled “Ambassador Stephen J. Rapp & US Ambassador in Sri Lanka Michel J Sison tour the site of a school & a hospital in the ‘No Fire Zone 2.

The second photograph of the duo titled “the site where many were killed by army shelling in 2009 January”.

Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs stated that it was conveyed to the US Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes that the US had levelled such allegations without any basis.

The Patriotic National Movement requests the government to name the US Ambassador to Sri Lanka as an unwelcome person.

General Secretary Wasanatha Bandara stated that this step should be taken due to the actions of her and visiting US Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes against the country.
