Update : Video :NCP receives heavy showers - Sluice gates of Parakkrama Samudra opened - Warning issued to residents living in low line areas
Ten sluice gates of the Parakkrama Samudra have been opened after heavy showers experienced in Polonnaruwa and its surroundings.
The Disaster Management Center has warned the people living in low line areas specially residents in villages situated along the Mahaweli river bank such as Tamankaduwa, Lankapura, Manampitiya and Gal Lalla.
Meanwhile the Madura Oya has overflowed due to heavy rain lashed in the area yesterday.
300 milk farmers who raring cattle inside the forest are being evacuated after the forest reserve has gone underwater.
Meanwhile police said that the Kandy-Mahiyangana road via famous 18 hair pin bends is now open for vehicular traffic after the rock rolled on it yesterday was cleared by now.
The Maha Oya-Aralaganwila road was also gone underwater after the tank bund of the Maha Oya was washed away yesterday due to heavy rain.
The Meteorology Department stated that many parts of the island could experience heavy rain within the next 24 hours.

The National Disaster Management Centre requests those who live in the surrounding lowlying areas of Parakrama Samudraya to be on alert as 10 sluice gates of the tank has been opened.
The Deputy Media Director of the Disaster Management Centre, Sarath Lal-kumara requests those living near Mahaweli river, including the residents of Tamankaduwa, Lankapura, Manampitiya and Gallella to be vigilant.
