The met department forecasts thunder showers in many parts of the island tonight.

However, the met department also stated that it expects a reduction in the rain that is affecting the Eastern parts of the island.

10 sluice gates of the Parakrama Samudraya were opened this morning due to the heavy rains that is affecting Polonnaruwa and its surrounding regions.

The Centre for Disaster Management stated that due to this those in the lowlands near the Mahaweli River including Thamankaduwa, Lankapura, Manampitiya, Gal – lalla should be vigilant.

Fifteen persons were hospitalized after a thunderbolt hit on the Niyandagala Forest Abode in Deiyandara Matara this afternoon.

Police said the thunderbolt stroke on the abode premises during heavy rain in the area.

A hospital spokesman said 5 persons have discharged after treatment while 10 patients are still receiving treatment.

He said a monk, 5 women and 4 children were among the victims.
