The owner of the Kosgoda Turtle Conservation Centre and his assistant who were arrested has been released on bail.

The Balapitiya Magistrate Asanga Bodaragama ordered the suspects to post bail of 500 thousand rupees each along with the cash bond of 15 thousand rupees each after the suspects were produced before the Magistrate’s Court.

The Magistrate has also ordered that the 4 albino turtles currently in the conservation centre to be sent to the Dehiwala Zoological Gardens through the Hikkaduwa Wildlife Protection Officer.

The Police state that the suspects have violated the Flora and Fauna Act by keeping these turtles in their possession.

However, Minister of Wildlife Resource Conservation Vijith Wijayamuni Soyza stated that although the conservation centre kept these albino turtles in captivity, violating the law, the conservation centre invariably did a service.
