In accordance with the reciprocal agreement reached between India and Sri Lanka to release detained fishermen two Tamil Nadu courts yesterday ordered the release of 61 Sri Lankan fishermen detained in the state's jails.

A court in Tuticorin on Friday released 59 fishermen from Ampara, Trincomalee and Negombo who were arrested between September 17th and November 8th last year and detained in the Central Prison in Chennai.

Five of the 59 fishermen were arrested on September 17th, another 26 on October 10th, 24 on October 31s and 4 on November 8th.

Sri Lanka meanwhile yesterday released more than 120 Indian fishermen, arrested by the Navy in the past several months.

According to authorities, 111 Indian fishermen from a jail in Jaffna were released on Friday after a court ordered their release on January 13.

Under the reciprocal agreement reached between the two governments about 160 Sri Lankan fishermen and four vessels would be released from India and 236 Indian fishermen and 90 boats will be released by Sri Lanka ahead of the proposed talks between fishermen associations of both the countries on January 20th.

The first exchange of fishermen released from Indian and Sri Lankan jails in accordance with the agreement reached on Wednesday by the governments of the two countries took place on Thursday.

Deputy Fisheries Minister Sarath Kumara Gunarathna speaking to our news team on the matter stated that all the arrested Indian Fishermen will be released.

Applications for Postal voting for Provincial polls to be accepted from 20th Jan to 7th Feb


The Elections Secretariat stated that applications for postal voting in view of the forthcoming provincial councils in the Western and Southern Province shall commence on the 20th of this month and will go on till the 7th of February.

Meanwhile, nominations for the elections will be accepted from the 30th of January till the 6th of February.

The election will be held as per the 2013 voter registry.

Meanwhile, Executive Director of PAFFEREL Rohana Hettiarachchi requested candidates to divulge details of their assets at least to the voters.
