Australia commends Sri Lanka's efforts in combating people smuggling
Australia has commended the steps taken by the Sri Lankan government to curb illegal migration.
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott's Special Envoy Major-General Andrew James Molan met with Minister of External Affairs Professor G.L. Peiris yesterday.
The Minister pointed out that a Joint Working Group between Sri Lanka and Australia had been established two years ago to combat people smuggling and that this mechanism was proving effective.
Maj. Gen. Molan said that he was delighted that Sri Lanka and Australia have been able to put in place a multipronged effort to deal with the problem of irregular maritime movement.
He appreciated Sri Lanka's support for the "Sovereign Border Policy" which the government of Australia had put in place to combat illegal migration.
He acknowledged that Sri Lanka and Australia are working together in a number of regional fora such as the Bali Process on Human Trafficking, People Smuggling and Other Transnational Crimes.
