The Government Nursing Officers’ Union says that steps should be taken for officially providing midwifery training to nursing students completing the basic nursing diploma training.

As a result of the protest made by the Family Health Services Union and GMOA, the Health Ministry Secretary recently cancelled the one-year midwifery  training diploma for nursing students that was scheduled to begin on January 16th.

However the Government Nursing Officers’ Union points out that midwifery training was launched in an unofficial manner on January 17th.

Government Nursing Officers’ Union chairman Saman Ratnapriya said that action would be taken to inform international health organizations including the WHO with regard to this by submitting a petition.
