14 members of Sihala Ravaya arrested
12 members of the Sihala Ravaya Organization who turned themselves over to the police in connection with attempting to break into the office of the Prime Minister were released on bail today.
The suspects were released after Colombo Fort Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya ordered each suspect to post 25,000 rupees as bail.
The Sihala Ravaya Organization engaged in a protest on the 8th of January in front of the Prime Minister’s Office located at Flower Road in Colombo demanding that Prime Minister D. M. Jayarathne should apologize with regard to the derogatory remark he made regarding the Buddhist clergy.
As the protestors attempted to force their way into the Premier’s office a tense situation arose.
Subsequently, Sumith Weliwatta, who is the chief organizer of the Colombo Central seat for the JHU, was arrested in connection with the incident and he was remanded till the 28th of this month.
Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana stated that 14 individuals have been arrested in connection with this incident thus far.
