Minister of Wildlife Conservation Vijith Vijayamuni Soyza stated that they have taken steps to issue special identification cards to gypsies above 18 years with citizenship.

According to the Minister this decision was taken after discussing with the gypsy community.

The gypsies, who perform palm reading and other entertaining acts while wandering across the island, are said to be descendents of Southern India.

The Minister further added that they will be provided with the freedom to continue their livelihood, while being concerned over the health of the animals used in their performances.
