Two opposition factions hold protests in Colombo.


Two protest marches followed by rallies organized by 2 opposition factions were held in Colombo this afternoon.

The political party protest march which started at Slave Island paraded to Hyde Park while the Trade Union march paraded Darley Road before it reached the Hyde Park grounds.

Meanwhile the Civil Organizations which assembled at Lipton Circus marched up to Hyde Park grounds to join the other two factions.

The roads between Slave Island and Town Hall were blocked due to the protest marches and vehicular traffic on surrounding roads was blocked due to the protests.

Addressing a rally held at the Hyde Park grounds, opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said that free Health and Education sectors of the country have collapsed.

The other protest march and rally was organized by the Democratic Party.

The protesters began marching from Technical junction and paraded through Olcott Mawatha to reach the Fort Railway Station.

Our correspondent reported that heavy traffic blocks were caused on roads around Maradana Railway Station and Maradana Technical college due to the protest.
