President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that the present government safeguarded the rights of the farming community.

He also said that people will not forget those who sold paddy stores and the Paddy Marketing Board for a song at the time.

He said the same parties who put farmers in trouble are protesting today for the rights of farmers.

The President was speaking at a ceremony to re-launch the payment of farmer pensions held at the Magam Ruhunupura International Conference Center in Hambantota today.

The President also said the fight which began to save the farmers in Mavil-aru eventually led to free the country from terrorism.

128 thousand 650 farmers above the age of 63 will be entitled to receive a pension with effect from this month.

The government has allocated 10 million rupees to fund the scheme.
