The National Anthem was sung in Tamil during a ceremony held with the participation of North Provincial Education Minister and TNA member T. Kurukularajah at Jayapuram Vidyalaya in Kilinochchi today.
Several representatives of the UN and the Australian government had joined the occasion.
Some students who welcomed the guests carried national flags while their fellow students carried the UN and the Australian flags.
Our correspondent stated that students sang the national anthem in Tamil while the national flag was being hoisted.
Earlier National Languages and Social Integration Minister Wasudeva Nanayakkara said that the Constitution has allowed singing the national anthem in both Sinhala and Tamil.
But the JHU pointed out that the national anthem should be sung only in Sinhala.
Our news team contacted the Administrative and Home Affairs Ministry to comment on the issue.
Ministry Secretary P.B. Abeykoon told our news team that the national anthem should be sung only in Sinhala.
However he said that certain occasions during which the national anthem was sung in Tamil have been reported.
The Secretary also said that attention would be drawn to this matter and the government will have discussions with relevant parties to this effect.
