UPDATE:Video: 10 independent groups give bonds; Main political parties to hand over nominations on the 5th and 6th of February
The Election Secretariat began to accept applications today from candidates for the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections.
Election Secretariat officials stated that no any application was submitted today but 10 independent groups have deposited cash bonds so far after the nominations were announced on the 16th of this month.
Four independent groups for Colombo, 2 groups for Gampaha, 1 group for Kalutara, 2 groups for Matara and 1 group for Galle are among the independent groups.
The acceptance of nominations for the Western and the Southern Provincial Council elections which started today will close on the 6th of Febru.
The United Peoples Freedom Alliance and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna stated that the nomination papers of their candidates would be submitted either on the 5th or the 6th of February.
Meanwhile the UNP has decided to submit nominations of their candidates on the 5th of February.
The UNP states that the proposal recently passed by the Northern Provincial Council opposes the constitution.
UPDATE: Thursday, 30 January 2014 - 07:11 PM ------------------------------------------------------- No nominations for 3 political parties.
Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said that 3 political parties will not receive nominations for the forthcoming Provincial Council elections.
They are the United Democratic Front, the National Development Front and the Sri Lanka Progressive Front.
Addressing a media briefing held at the Election Secretariat this morning, the Commissioner said that a problem with regard to the secretaries of these parties was the reason to deny nominations to these parties.
