Wildlife Officers have arrested 12 army soldiers while they were felling trees deep in the Omunugala forest reserve at Maha Oya in Ampara.

The Maha Oya Beat Officer said that the suspects will be produced before the Court this afternoon.

When contacted Army Media Spokesman Ruwan Wanigasuriya said that a group of villagers have given a tip off about felling to the officers of a nearby army camp.

Later another group of army soldiers accompanied by a beat officer arrested the soldiers inside the forest.

He also said that the suspected soldiers had been permitted by the camp to fell some trees for a construction in the camp to which they were attached.

However he said that the army will assist in all the investigations with regard to the incident and to deal with the allegations against the suspected soldiers under the civil law.
