Video: Case filed against CTC regarding pictorial warnings on cigarette packaging adjourned till 29th of April
The case filed by Ceylon Tobacco Company challenging the Health Ministry gazette notification on pictorial warnings for cigarette packaging was taken before the Appeal Court today.
The gazette notification instructs the tobacco company to use 80 % of the surface of its packaging with pictorial warnings but the lawyer appearing for the Health Ministry agreed to reduce the percentage to 70% when the case was taken for hearing today.
However a company spokesman told our news team that the lawyer who appeared for the company had objected to the Health Ministry lawyer’s proposal.
During the hearing, the Deputy Solicitor General has stated that the brand name should not be displayed on the packaging.
At that point, the company lawyer enquired whether his client has no right to display his trade name on his own products.
Judges Sathya Hettige and Rohini Marasinghe who heard the case fixed its next hearing for the 29th of April.
