The suicide bomb attack by the LTTE on the Central Bank Headquarters took place 18 years ago from yesterday.

The LTTE suicide cadres drove a lorry, loaded with 200 kilograms of high explosives into the bank building, killing 96 persons including 41 bank employees on the 31st of January 1996.

A floral tribute was held yesterday at the monument and a memorial plaque erected in the bank premises.

Meanwhile a peaceful demonstration was held in front of the Central Bank in protest of the international interference in Sri Lanka.

A large gathering including Colombo District MP R. Dumindha Silva participated in the demonstration.

Addressing the gathering MP R Dumindha Silva said that the government will successfully face the anti Sri Lankan resolution to be submitted to the UN Human Rights session.

MP R Duminda Silva also stated that NGO’s and the Tamil Diaspora were trying to divide the country but the people have very well understood the commitment of the President on behalf of the Country.

Central Bank governor Ajith Nivard Cabral, Deputy Minister Faizer Mustapa, Colombo District MP R. Dumindha Silva, MP A.H.M. Azwer and relatives of the dead bank employees participated in the event.

Addressing a gathering Central Bank governor Cabral said that Sri Lanka can find its own solutions to the prevailing crises.
