The 66th Independence Day under the theme of ‘Let’s unite to build a land of global winners’ was celebrated in grand scale at Independence Avenue in Kegalle this morning.

Special guests of the celebration started arriving in the venue after 8.30am.

After the arrival of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the commanders of the Three Armed Forces and the Police Chief, Prime Minister D.M. Jayarathna and other ministers arrived in the venue.

The Independence Day celebration started after the President hoisted the National flag while school children in the area sang the national anthem.

Later a minute’s silence was observed in respect of the war heroes who sacrificed themselves for the country. Then the soldiers of three armed forces presented arms followed by firing of the 21 Gun salute.

Addressing the gathering President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that making war crime charges against Sri Lanka just based on the information provided by separatist elements is a crime.

After the President’s Independence Day speech, a guard of honor by the Three Armed Forces was followed by a parade of cultural presentations.

Later President Rajapaksa moved with thousands of participants who gathered to witness the Independence Day celebration.

66TH Independence Day celebrations are currently under way in Kegalle in grand scale.

President Mahinda Rajapakse addressing the Independence Day celebrations stated that Powerful countries should realize the difficulties of fighting terrorism and added that Sri lanka kept its doors open for all criticizing elements.

Prime Minister D M Jayarathna, Defence secretary, commanders of the Tri Forces and Ministers are also in attendance.
