Update : Certain countries attempt to use Tamil people as a shield - says President.
Addressing the 66TH Independence ceremony President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that certain countries are attempting to interfere with the country’s internal affairs by using Tamils in the North as a shield.
The President pointed out that nobody came forward to protect the human rights of Tamils during the war in the North.
The President also requested all the countries to join hands with Sri Lanka to safeguard its Independence.
He quoted the Buddha’s teaching to describe the importance of Independence.
After the President’s Independence Day speech, a guard of honor by the Three Armed Forces was followed by a parade of cultural presentations.
Later President Rajapaksa moved with thousands of participants who gathered to celebrate the Independence Day.
Heads of foreign diplomatic missions and foreign representatives also participated.

66TH Independence Day celebrations are currently under way in Kegalle in grand scale.
President Mahinda Rajapakse addressing the Independence Day celebrations stated that Powerful countries should realize the difficulties of fighting terrorism and added that Sri lanka kept its doors open for all criticizing elements.
Prime Minister D M Jayarathna, Defence secretary, commanders of the Tri Forces and Ministers are also in attendance.
