Coinciding with the 66th Independence Celebration 1263 prison inmates were freed under President’s Pardon today.

According to the Prisons Department Media spokesman, Gamini Kulatunga, the inmates who were freed have been those over 75 years and those imprisoned for minor offences.

Meanwhile, several areas have held independence celebrations at provincial level to commemorate the 66th Independence Day.

The UNP independence celebration was held at Polwaththa temple, Colpetty.

At the same time, floral tributes were held in front of the statue of first Prime Minister of Independence Sri Lanka D.S. Senanayake at the Independence Square premises this morning.

Colombo Mayor M.A. Musammil, several politicians and government officials participated in this event.
