Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said that Provincial Council elections for the Western and the Southern Provinces will be held on March 29.
The dead line for nominations was closed this afternoon and 3 thousand 794 candidates from 24 political parties and 42 independence groups have handed over nominations.
One hundred and 55 members to be elected for the two provincial councils, and among them, 102 members will be elected to the Western Provincial Council while the balance 53 will be elected to the Southern Provincial Council.
Among the political parties those handed over nominations to contest the forthcoming Provincial Council election are United Peoples Freedom Alliance, United National Party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, Democratic Party, Janasetha Front, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, Ceylon Workers Congress, Nava Sihala Urumaya, New Democratic Front, Democratic Peoples Front and Nava Sama Samaja Party.
18 political parties and 15 independence groups handed over nominations for the Colombo district. However, nominations of 4 independence groups were rejected.
The highest number of candidates amounting to 1 thousand 247 will contest for the Colombo district, and 40 members out of the total will be elected for the district.
14 political parties and 10 independence groups have handed over nominations for the Kalutara district. The District Election Secretariat stated that the nominations of Akila Ilangai Peoples Congress and one of the independence groups have been rejected.
550 candidates will contest the March election and 22 will be elected to represent Kalutara district in the Western Provincial Council.
The nominations given by all 13 registered political parties and 9 independence groups for the Gampaha district have been accepted.
Gampaha District Secretary J.J. Rathnasiri said that 946 candidates will contest from the district for its 40 seats in the Western Provincial Council.
No nomination has been rejected from the districts of Galle, Matara or Hambantota.
450 candidates from 14 political parties and 4 independence groups have given nominations for the Galle district. Among them, 22 members will be elected to represent the district in the Southern Provincial council.
380 candidates from 14 political parties and 5 independence groups will contest from the Matara district and 17 members will be elected to represent the district in the Southern Provincial Council.
221 candidates from 9 political parties and 4 independence groups have handed over nominations for the Hambantota district. 14 members among them will be elected to the Southern Provincial Council.
Meanwhile the Election Secretariat stated that it is working out on the allocation of preferential numbers to each individual candidate.

Main Political parties hand over nominations for all districts - One hour period allocated to file objections.
The deadline to accept nominations for the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections expired at 12 noon today.
Several main political parties handed over nominations for a few districts today as well.
The UPFA handed over its nominations for the districts of Matara, Galle and Hambantota this morning.
MP Namal Rajapaksa also accompanied the candidates to hand over nominations for the Hambantota district.
Meanwhile several incidents of the violation of election rules were reported to our news team today.
Police took actions to send away UPFA Matara district candidate Anarkalee Aakarsha when she attempted to forcefully enter the Matara District Secretariat.
Meanwhile our correspondent said that vehicular traffic on the Galle road has been blocked as several groups of supporters of 3 UPFA politicians are parading on the road from Aluthgama to Kalutara.
After the nominations were closed at 12noon today, the Election Commissioner has allocated a period of one hour afterward for parties to file objections if any
Later on, the Election Commissioner is scheduled to announce the poll date.
