A gazette notification from the Higher education Ministry.
The higher education ministry has decided to relax the mandatory law where a qualification certificate must be obtained from the respective professional body when establishing private institutions that provide degrees.
That is my amending the 1978, number 16 university act.
Secretary to the higher education ministry issued the relevant gazette notification on the 31st of January.
Some of the main areas where provisions have been made to award degrees are in the fields of medicine, engineering and architecture.
Federation of university teachers association also condemns the move adopted by the higher education ministry.
Secretary of FUTA Rohan Fernando speaking to our news team stated that such a move could have an adverse impact.
Although our news team tried to contact the higher education Minister S B Dissanayaka regarding the issue he was not available to comment since the Minister was out of the country.
