Special Judiciary Medical Officer of Peradeniya University Amal Wedisinghe who performed the postmortem on university student D.K. Nishantha confirmed today that the victim committed suicide by hanging himself.

D.K. Nishantha abandoned university education after a ragging incident in 2011, and mystery surrounded yesterday as to whether he was murdered or if he committed suicide.

However Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that the mystery was cleared after Special Judiciary Medical Officer of Peradeniya University Amal Wedisinghe confirmed that the death of D.K. Nishantha was a suicide.

The deceased was a resident of Aacharigama in Angunakola Pelassa, and he was also the main witness to a University ragging case heard in Kandy Magistrate Court.

Peradeniya University Vice Chancellor Professor Athula Senarathna told our news team that a special committee was appointed to probe the nature of the tragedy although it was proved a suicide.     

The remains of D.K. Nishantha were scheduled to be taken to his home at Thihagoda in Matara today and the funeral will be held tomorrow.

Special Judiciary Medical Officer of Peradeniya University Amal Wedisinghe who performed the postmortem of past student D.K. Nishantha’s death confirmed today that the victim committed suicide by hanging himself.

D.K. Nishantha’s body was found hanging on a tree in nearby woodland in the University premises a few days ago.

Kandy Magistrate Ajith Dharmapriya held the magistrate inquiry on the spot yesterday, and ordered police to hand over the body to the Medical Faculty to perform a postmortem.

Brother of the deceased Peradeniya student identifies body; Autopsy postponed till mother and father of deceased arrives


The postmortem of the body believed to be of a past student of Peradeniya University has been postponed until tomorrow as his parents did not come to identify the body.

The decomposed body found hanging from a tree in nearby woodland of Peradeniya University premises yesterday was identified later as a past student of the same university D.K. Nishantha.

However the victim’s brother D.K. Sampath and his paternal uncle D.K. Gamini identified the body today.

The Magistrate inquiry into the death of D.K. Nishantha was held at the Peradeniya University today.

Later Kandy Magistrate Ajith Dharmapriya ordered that the report of the postmortem to be done by the University Forensic Department should be submitted to the Court.

The deceased D. K. Nishantha, who hails from the Angulu – kola – palassa Aachariya – gama region was a witness in the case regarding ragging that took place in at the Peradeniya University in 2011.

Speaking at a press conference held this afternoon Vice Chancellor of the Peradeniya University Proffesor Athula Senarathne stated that an inquiry regarding ragging has been initiated at University level as well and that a committee has been appointed to conduct the inquiry.

Speaking further he stated that although this student died, the inquiry will continue and that the results of the inquiry can be presented within the next two weeks.

Body found in Peradeniya University premises identified as that of the main witness of 2011 ragging incident

The decomposed body found hanging from a tree in a nearby woodland of Peradeniya University premises was identified as of an undergraduate of the same university.

Police said that the victim was identified as D.K. Nishantha of Aacharyagama in Angunakola Pelassa and entered the Arts Faculty of Peradeniya University in 2011.

He was testified as the main witness before the Kandy High Court for a ragging case in which a student was sexually assaulted inside a hostel in the year 2011.

The student had left his residence on the 26th stating that he was leaving for Kandy and he had contacted his uncle on the 27th via telephone and informed his uncle that he had reached Kandy.

The uncle of the student D. K. Gamini had subsequently lodged a complaint with the Peradeniya Police stating the student had disappeared as he had not heard from his nephew since he had reached Kandy.

However, the body of the student was discovered yesterday hanging from a tree in a thicket approximately 200 meters from the Marcus Fernando Hall.

A decomposed body hanged on a tree in nearby woodland of Peradeniya University premises was found this afternoon.

A group of school scouts who engaged in some field work 200 metres away from the Marcus Fernando Hall have spotted the corpse and informed it to the University authorities.

Peradeniya police have initiated investigations into the incident.
