China assures continues support to Sri lanka
Professor G.L.Peiris, Minister of External Affairs, held substantive discussions with Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, in Beijing today.
Minister Peiris was visiting Beijing as the Special Envoy of President Mahinda Rajapaksa on the invitation of Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
The principal focus of the discussion was the elevation of the bilateral relationship between Sri Lanka and China to a Strategic Co-operative Partnership, agreed on at the discussions between President Mahinda Rajapaksa and President Xi Jinping during President Rajapaksa’s State Visit in May last year.
The two Foreign Ministers noted that the special relationship straddles four main areas -- political co-operation, defence and security, economic relations, and cultural matters. They considered practical arrangements in each of these areas and modalities to expedite progress in each sector.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi assured Professor Peiris of the strong support which the People’s Republic of China will continue to extend to Sri Lanka in respect of these issues in all international fora.
They agreed on mechanisms to promote closer dialogue and collaboration between the two countries with regard to political issues.
