Authority on Private degrees returned to professional bodies - SB's gazette notification cancelled on Presidents directives.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa directed the Higher Education Ministry to immediately cancel the gazette notification which empowered to establish private institutes to offer academic degrees without essentially obtaining endorsement from relevant professional bodies.
Higher Education Deputy Minister Nandimitra Ekanayake said that a new gazette notification canceling the previous one will be issued in the cause of time.
Earlier it was made mandatory to obtain an endorsement letter from the relevant boards before setting up of a private institute to offer degrees of Medical Science, Engineering, Architecture and several other professions.
However a special gazette notification was issued empowering private degrees to be offered without the endorsement, and Sri Lanka Medical Council, Sri Lanka Engineering Institute, Government Medical Officers Association and Federation of University Teachers Association objected the Higher Education Ministry gazette notification.
