The Rajarata University students’ sit-in-protest which began 66 days ago was dispersed by Mihintale police this morning.

Police also dismantled the hut in which students sat in front of the University.

Mihintale police spokesman said that a tense situation was erupted during the incident and 8 students were taken into custody.

Rajarata University students started the sit-in-protest on several demands including the reinstatement of already suspended 28 students and solving certain problems with regard to the management degree conducted by the same university.

The protest was set to continue despite the Court ruling given for the second time ordering students to disperse themselves from the premises.

In this backdrop, Mihintale police removed 20 protesters from the premises and arrested another 8 students this morning.

Our news team contacted Rajarata University Vice Chancellor Professor Ranjith Wijegunawardana to describe the situation took place in front of the University this morning.

Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that the 8 students who were arrested on contempt of Court this morning will be produced before the Anuradhapura Magistrate in the afternoon.

Rajarata University students' protesting hut dismantled

Police have dismantled the hut in which Rajarata University students were holding a continuous protest in front of the University this morning.

Our area correspondent reported that a tense situation erupted during the incident and police have arrested several students.

Rajarata University students started the protest 65 days ago against the authorities suspending of 28 students of the same university.

However the Court ordered protesting students recently to withdraw themselves from the premises.
