Fisherman from a number of regions in the island refrained from going out to sea today.

Our regional reporters in the Puttalam, Chilaw, Negambo, Mannar and Pottuvil regions stated that fishermen in those regions had organized protest marches as well.

The protests were organized in memory of member of the Chilaw Fishing Cooperative Society Anthony Fernando who died 2 years ago.

5 proposals regarding factors that affect fishermen were also prepared by the fishing associations that convened in Chilaw.

Meanwhile, 8 more Indian fishermen who were arrested by Sri Lankan authorities for violating the international maritime boundary were released and handed over to the Indian coastguard yesterday.

Indian media reported that the fishermen were handed over to the Indian Coast Guard by the Sri Lankan Navy at the International Maritime Boundary near the Polk Strait.

Reports state that the India Coast Guard took custody of the fishermen and 4 vessels at approximately 8pm last night.

317 Indian fishermen and 45 Indian fishing vessels have been handed over to the India Coast Guard thus far.

Similarly 212 Sri Lankan fishermen who were in Indian custody have been released back to Sri Lanka along with 28 Sri Lankan fishing vessels.
