Terrorism Expert ordered to pay 53,000 to Tamil Organization
A Canadian Court has ordered Sri Lanka-born terrorism expert Professor Rohan Gunarathne to pay 53,000 Canadian Dollars in damages and in costs to a Canadian based Tamil Organization.
A Canadian newspaper reported today that a Canadian Judge has given the order after considering the case filed by the Canadian Tamil Congress which sought compensation from Gunarathne for defamatory.
In an interview given to a Sri Lankan newspaper in 2011, Professor Gunarathne was quoted as saying that Toronto-based Canadian Tamil Congress had supported the LTTE operatives in Canada.
Later the Canadian Tamil Congress filed a defamation case against Gunarathne for linking it to the LTTE and sought damages from Professor Gunarathne.
Accordingly, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice has given a verdict in favour of the Canadian Tamil Congress and ordered 37,000 Canada Dollars in damages and another 16,000 Canada Dollars in costs on Gunarathne.
