Afghan President Hamid Karzai postponed a planned visit to Sri Lanka over the killing of 19 Afghan soldiers in an assault by Taliban militants.

Karzai’s office said in a statement said the Afghan president is saddened by this tragic incident, and therefore he postponed today’s official trip to Sri Lanka.

During his visit, Afgan President was scheduled to declare open an Afghan embassy in Colombo on Monday.

Karzai's visit was aimed at further strengthening the bilateral relations between the two countries as both countries are members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.

Afghan President to the country today

President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai will arrive in the country today on a 2 day official visit.

During his visit, President Karzai is expected to hold talks with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Government officials and members of Parliament from the opposition parties.

The opening of the Afghanistan Embassy in Colombo by Afghan Foreign Minister Ahmad Zarar will also take place tomorrow.
