Video: Don't depend on irrigation tanks; advise for Yala farmers.
The Irrigation Department stated that the lowest level of water has been reported from the irrigation tanks in the recent history as the beginning of Yala season is nearing.
The Department therefore requests the farmers not to start cultivation expecting to depend on irrigated water this season.
The water level of reservoirs near hydropower stations has also been lowered as catchment areas did not receive sufficient rain and the Ceylon Electricity Board stated that hydro-power generation has also been declined to 18 %.
The total power generation of the country is 2200 megawatts, and 1300 megawatts are generated from hydro power sources.
The water levels of reservoirs at Kothmale, Victoria, Randenigala, and Rantambe have currently been dropped to 40%.
CEB Chairman W.B. Ganegala said that consequent to the drought, thermal power is heavily used to meet electricity demand these days.
