The Education Department closed down the Gampaha Bandaranayake Vidyalaya indefinitely after a tense situation erupted during a student’s protests against its principal today.

Protesting students charged that their principal has sought police assistance in school administration and ushered a strict control over students.

Our correspondents who went to cover the incident said that several school buildings were damaged after student’s hurled stones and shattered windows.

Some students also attempted to block our correspondents covering the mayhem and they have also assaulted our correspondents on the spot.

Subsequently a heated debated occurred between the students and the journalists.

Meanwhile our news team contacted Gampaha Bandaranayake Vidyalaya principal Lal Dissanayake to comment on the students protest.

Dissanayake rejected the students’ allegations and said that the students were provoked by certain teachers.

Meanwhile Gampaha Circuit Education Director S.K. Mallawa Arachchi told our news team that the school was closed indefinitely due to the aftermath of the students protest.

A police team led by SSP Vijitha Komasaru who is in charge of the area visited the scene and put the situation under control.

Gampaha police also said that Old boys and parents of the school have evacuated the unruly students from the school premises later.
