The police department says that annually five to six police officers commit suicide.

Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana told our news team when inquired about the death of a police officer yesterday attached to the Puttalam Police.

A 45-year old police constable who was a resident of Medagama in Galgamuwa in Kurunegala attached to the Puttalam Police has thus committed suicide yesterday.

That was by hanging himself from a tree near his house.

The police said that a family dispute had been the reason for this.

Earlier too a police sergeant attached to the Ududumbara Police committed suicide by hanging himself  inside his home due to a heartburn over  discontinuance of service.

Similarly a police inspector of the Intelligence Unit of the Mt. Lavinia Division of the Western Province also committed suicide by shooting at his head with his official firearm recently at Godagama in Homagama.
