Customs officials intercepted at least 16 people who tried to smuggle a total of 9.5 kg of gold worth 30 million rupees at Chennai airport yesterday.

According to airport sources, the gold was found on passengers who reached the city airport from Dubai, Singapore, Muscat and Colombo.

Three people from Ramanathapuram district smuggled in 1.8 kg of gold from Dubai in the form of trolley rods in suitcases.

Five persons from Kerala had concealed 800 grams in secret compartments in suitcases.
