US Secretary of State John Kerry has described a meeting with his Russian counterpart over Ukraine as "tough", but promised to continue talking.

Kerry said he was committed to working with Moscow to ease the crisis.

Russia's Sergei Lavrov refused to meet his Ukrainian counterpart, whose government Moscow does not recognise.

A tense stand-off continues between pro-Russian forces and the Ukrainian military in the Crimea region, where a UN diplomat was threatened by gunmen.
