Threat of foot and mouth disease spreading; Prevention orders for 8 districts; 30,000 vaccinations to be airlifted
The Livestock Production and Health Department stated that it has found infected cattle from five Divisional Secretariat Divisions as the foot and mouth disease is spreading in the Gampaha district.
Having taken the situation into consideration, the department has issued a special gazette notification preventing transport of cattle and beef within the district and out of it.
The cattle transport is already prohibited in the districts of Anuradhapura, Puttalam, Trincomalee, Ampara, Jaffna, Mulaitivu and Vavuniya.
Director General of the Livestock Production and Health Department Dr. Kumara de Silva said that foot and mouth disease could infect other animals such as pigs.
The cattle population in this country is about 1.5 million and 5600 among them have been already infected.
Dr. Silva said that although the Department attempts to minimize the spreading of the disease by imposing laws, it could fast spread due to the negligence of the general public.
However the Director General said that 30 thousand immune injections will be airlifted next week in order to minimize its spreading.
