Britain is to join the US and three other countries in pushing for a full international inquiry into alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka after the government failed to satisfy international calls for such an inquiry.

The prime minister’s office said that as Sri Lanka had failed to do so the UK had joined four other countries in tabling a motion at the UN human rights council.

It supports the call by the UN high commissioner for human rights for an international and independent investigation.

Prime Minister David Cameron has personally written to a number of leaders whose countries are on the human rights council this session calling on them to support this resolution.

Meanwhile UPFA General Secretary Minister Susil Premajayantha explained matters about the report presented by UN Human Right Commissioner Navi Pillay in Geneva.

Addressing a media briefing held in Colombo today Minister Premajayantha said that the government would not react to any matter with regard to the country’s sovereignty.
