PAFFREL stated that postal voting for the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections was marked at 80% today.

Its Executive Director Rohana Hetti Aarachchi said that today’s postal voting was held peacefully.

Postal voting will be held tomorrow too, and those who fail to do so could cast their vote again on the 20th of this month.

Meanwhile Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has informed party General Secretaries that they should not organize campaign marches or parades that directly impact election propaganda.

The Election Commissioner met party General Secretaries at his Office in Rajagiriya this morning.

During the meeting, JVP representatives complained to the Commissioner that the government used the Geneva resolution against Sri Lanka to organize a protest march from Hambantota to Gampaha intending to boost party election propaganda.

Former MP and JVP politburo member K.D. Lal Kantha stated that the government is engaging in activities that are a direct violation of election laws.

Commenting on the JVP’s claim, the Election Commissioner said that only religious or cultural processions could be organized during election period.

However answering journalists UPFA General Secretary Minister Susil Premajayantha stated that no party within the government coalition has organized such a procession and that the UPFA does not require such actions to win the election

Certain issues were also brought to the attention of the Election Commissioner by the UNP.

General Secretary of the UNP MP Tissa Attanayake expressed the UNP's concern regarding the party not being granted permission to use popular venues to hold election meetings.

Postal voting commences: general secretaries of 3 main political parties meet election commissioner.


The postal voting for the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections are currently underway.

1.2 million Government workers have been qualified for postal voting, and those who are unable to vote today and tomorrow can do so on 20th of this month.

Election Commissioner’s Office stated that one of its officials will be deployed to observe the function of the postal voting centers.

Meanwhile PAFFEREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi told our news team that 300 monitors had been deployed for monitoring postal voting.

The JVP charges that the UPFA candidates have been violating the election law during the last few weeks ahead of the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections.

Having met the Election Commissioner this morning, a group of JVP Leaders led by party General Secretary Tilvin Silva expressed his views to media.
