Sporadic fires spread across 100 acres
Karukkuwa and Sembukattiya areas in Madampe have faced severe fires which have spread sparsely across an area of 100 acres.
According to residents, the blaze occurred after a paddy field was set on fire.
About 10 acres have been completely destroyed by the fire, which also set a coir mill ablaze.
The fire has been doused by the joint efforts of Police, Army and Disaster Management units as well as residents.
According to our correspondent, the fire which occurred at a Pine forest located above Watawala Tamil Maha Vidyalaya in Hatton continues to spread.
About 10 acres out of the 50 acre Pine forest has been destroyed by the fire.
The Disaster Management Centre stated that a fire is spreading across the Hantana forest reserve.
According to the Deputy Media Coordinator of the Disaster Management Centre, they called for the assistance of the police and army to douse the fire.
He further said that, fires have been reported from several areas in the island due to the prevailing dry weather.
