Geneva resolution against Sri Lanka gets more teeth
The new and revised US draft resolution on Sri Lanka which is circulating among members of the UN Human Rights Council has got tougher by calling for an international independent investigation on Sri Lanka as proposed by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay.
The new draft, which is expected to be further discussed at a meeting between co-sponsors of the draft and others on Tuesday, has been reworded following heavy lobbying and talks among those pushing for an international investigation in Sri Lanka.
The proposed text titled ‘Promoting reconciliation, accountability, and human rights in Sri Lanka’ recalls the High Commissioner’s conclusion in her recent report on Sri Lanka that national mechanisms have failed.
The new draft also welcomes the successful Provincial Council elections held in September 2013 and in particular the high turn-out and participation in all three provinces.
However, Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Keheliya Rambukwella stated that Sri Lanka has initiated several programmes already.
