UPDATE:Video: 48 provincial councillors defeated.
48 former Provincial Councilors of the Western and the Southern Provincial Councils have lost their seats in the election concluded on Saturday.
32 PC members who represented the Western Provincial Council and 16 ruling party members as well as opposition members are among the defeated candidates.
Several war hero candidates who won seats in the Provincial Council election in 2009 have lost their seats this time.
Former Southern Provincial Councilor Ajith Prasanna who had often clashed with Geetha Kumarasinghe in the Galle district is also among the defeated war hero candidates.
Several artistes who contested the Provincial Council election have also been elected to the two Provincial Councils.
Among them are Geetha Kumarasinghe, Rodney Frazer, Ravindra Yasaz, Udara Rathnayake, Naleen Pradeep Uduwela.
However Nadeesha Hemamalee and Anarkalee Aakarsha contested from the UNP and the UPFA respectively but were not elected to Provincial Councils.
Several Trade Unionists belonging to the JVP have also been elected to the Western Provincial Council.
Lanka Teachers Association General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe, K.D. Lal Kantha of the National Trade Unions Center and Petroleum Public Workers Union General Secretary Asoka Ranwala were among them.
However Federation of Self Employees Association President Mahinda Kahanda Gamage who contested from the Colombo district for the Western Provincial Council was defeated.
Meanwhile All Ceylon Railway Workers Association General Secretary Sumathipala Manawadu who died in a motor cycle accident a few days before the election secured 2 thousand 391 preferential votes.

Two million of the Western and the Southern Provinces did not vote
The analyzing of voter registration statistics reveal that nearly two million voters have not cast their votes in the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections this year.
One million 873 thousand and 804 persons were registered for voting in the Southern Provincial Council this time but only one million 252 thousand and 296 cast their votes.
Accordingly 621 thousand 508 eligible voters or 33.16% have not cast their vote in the Provincial Council election that concluded on Saturday.
Four million 024 thousand and 624 persons were registered for voting in the Western Provincial Council this time but only two million 669 thousand and 316 cast their vote.
Accordingly one million 355 thousand 308 eligible voters or 33.67% have not cast their votes in the Provincial Council election that concluded on Saturday.
In the Colombo district, out of one million 552 thousand 734 registered voters, only one million 21 thousand and 188 have cast vote.
Accordingly 531 thousand 546 eligible voters of the Colombo district or 34.23% have not cast vote this time.
In the Gampaha district, out of one million 590 thousand and 76 registered voters, only one million 45 thousand 665 voters have cast their votes.
Accordingly 544 thousand 411 eligible voters of the Gampaha district or 34.23% from the total registered voters have not cast their vote in the recently concluded Provincial Council election.
