The Appeal Court rejected yesterday three petitions filed in connection with obtaining a driving license for Buddhist monks.

The Appeal Court thus discarded three petitions that three Buddhist monks had filed requesting that an order be issued nullifying the decision taken to reject the applications they had submitted to the Motor Traffic Commissioner for obtaining a driving license.

Venerable Theros Waskaduwa Sri Shaakyamuni Buddhist Temple resident Dr. Paravaahaera Wimalawansa, Maalambey Susilaaraama resident Bodaagama Seelawimala and Southern Hokandara Ganeywatta Buddhist Temple resident Biyagama Somarathana had filed this petition.

The Appeal Court Judges Deepaali Wijesundara and Upaali Gunartne who considered the petition stating their verdict said that a damage to  Buddhist Culture is caused by providing driving licence to a Buddhist monk.

The verdict also mentions that the judiciary is bound by the Sri Lankan constitution to protect Buddhism.
