The World Health Organization has recognized 11 countries in the South Asian region including Sri Lanka as countries those eliminated polio virus from their soil.

WHO Sri Lanka representative Dr. Firdosi Rustom Mehta handed over the certification with regard to this proclamation coming to effect from the 27th of March to Health Minister Maithreepala Sirisena yesterday.

The first polio case of Sri Lanka was reported in 1944, and afterward, no polio cases were so far reported from 1990.
